Message from the president
Welcome to the official website of the American Association of Pediatric Urologists!
We are a group of over 180 physicians from across the United States and Canada that are dedicated to the care of children with genito-urinary conditions. As a non-profit organization, we strive to promote educational and research endeavors in our field. We aim to foster discussion and informational exchanges between practitioners to better serve the care of our patients.
In January 2016, we held an outstanding meeting hosted by our Past President, Dr. William Defoor, at the JW Marriott Guanacaste Resort and Spa in the wonderful country of Costa Rica. An outstanding academic program was conducted with the usual thought provoking presentations and extensive discussions. We obtained 14.25 hours of Category I Continuing Medical Education credit through the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center CME Department. Everyone who attended felt the meeting was a rousing success with great weather and plenty of outdoor excursions.
Our next annual meeting is scheduled for January 16th – 20th, 2017, at the Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort in Los Cabos Mexico. January is an ideal time to visit the tip of Baja California Peninsula with perfect weather (Highs 78-82, Low’s 61-63 and a mild Mediterranean like climate with generally low humidity). The Los Cabos is comprised of two contrasting towns 20 miles apart and connected by a 4 lane highway. The area in between is referred to as “the corridor”, where all major golf developments are located, including Cabo del Sol. Cabos San Lucas is a bustling tourist town with a 350 ship marina. It is best known for its lively atmosphere, wide selection of restaurants, international cuisine, vibrant nightlife and landmark rock formation, “El Arco.” San Jose Del Cabo is a quaint Colonial Mexican town with authentic architecture and streets lined with galleries, cafes, boutiques and fine restaurants. The location is at the dramatic convergence between two seas, the Sea of Cortez & the Pacific Ocean. In the winter, pods of whales can be observed in the area. They bear their calves in the warm Gulf of California after completing their 6000 mile migration from Alaska and Siberia. The area is also known for its Marlin fishing. It remains one of the safest tourist destinations in the world.
As you may know, the area has been significantly rebuilt after Category IV Hurricane Odile struck on September 14th, 2014. The Hilton, located within “the corridor” was completely rebuilt and essentially is a new hotel with a dedicated and loyal staff who contributed to the reconstruction. The Hilton resembles a luxury style hacienda complete with spa, beach, and several nearby 18-hole golf courses including the 2 courses at Cabo Del Sol. There is a free form pool with a swim up bar, whirlpools, fitness center, several restaurants, and an inviting lounge. Virtually all of the activities are within 20 minutes of the resort.
The venue will be spectacular with multiple opportunities for local activities such as golf, horseback riding, world class deep-sea fishing, gray and humpback whale watching, relaxing on the beach, zip lining, biking, snorkeling, scuba diving, ATV tours, local crafts and arts exhibitions, and Mexican cooking classes. Los Cabos is also known as having one of the finest food scenes in Mexico. The area is easily accessible with direct flights from Dallas, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Houston, Chicago, Denver, Phoenix, Detroit, San Francisco, San Jose, Santa Ana, San Diego, Calgary, Salt Lake, Portland and Seattle to the Los Cabos International airport. The Hilton is an approximately 20 minutes ride away.
As always, our meeting planner, Maureen McCarthy, can help with all your reservation needs. She can be reached at Maureen@global-meeting-solutions.com.
As a final note, only AAPU members who are up to date with their annual dues may register for the meeting. Hope to see you in Los Cabos in January!
